What’s So Special About Prime Rib?
For special occasions, dinner parties, or even a nice dinner out, prime rib is often the meat of choice. It’s a fabulous cut of meat, perfect for entertaining – or everyday enjoyment.
At Chamberlain’s Steak & Chop House, prime rib is one of our most popular menu items. But what’s so special about prime rib? Why is so beloved? What makes it different than other cuts of meat? Read on as we explain from our steakhouse near me:
What Makes Prime Rib Special?
Prime rib is cut from the rib section of the cow. What is unique about it is that you’ll see an eye of fat in the center of the meat, surrounded by marbleized meat. When cooked, the fats of the eye and surrounding tissue melt into the meat, providing juicy, tender meat in every bite. This section of meat is underused, hence the higher fat content.
Any Tips for Buying Prime Rib to Prepare at Home?
When purchasing a prime rib to enjoy at home, you might consider various sections of the rib roast and which best suit your preference. A full prime rib roast at a steakhouse near me is made up of the meat between ribs 6-12 and probably weights about 15 pounds. For most, that’s a lot of meat! Instead, you can request certain sections of the prime rib roast if you know what you are looking for. If you want a leaner cut of prime rib, ask the butcher for the “loin end,” which is ribs 10-12. If you like a prime rib roast with higher fat content, aim to purchase the “chuck end,” which is ribs 6-9. Prime rib can be purchased bone-in or boneless. Also note: the ribeye steak is also a smaller cut of prime rib if that serving size is preferable.
Is Prime Rib the Same as Prime Meat?
This is one that has many confused. “Prime” beef grading is a system used by the USDA to show consumers the quality of the beef. They often use the “prime” grade to indicate that the meat is of the highest grade and finest quality for consumption. While prime rib is a very high quality cut of meat, its name is not related to the USDA grading system.
