Traditions Weave a Tapestry

A framework if you will. Long-held traditions truly keep people together. Lives get busy. People relocate, and the world changes. It is so good to know that there are certain markers throughout the year. Knowing you’ll connect with those you do indeed care about.

Mother’s Day is a great example. Think back through the years. Which celebrations stand out for you? Has your mother ever shown you something she’s kept? Something you made for her when you were very young. Have you done the same?

Starting New Traditions

Some traditions have no beginning. Seems they’ve just been there forever. Others may have come about quietly, unexpectedly, necessarily.

One family found themselves with three generations, all at different levels of financial success. Paper routes to comfortably retired. As the families grew the holidays became consumed with finding the right gifts for everyone. Some of the fun was slipping away.

A family member proposed everyone rethink the holiday and the family priorities. Could everyone agree to buy just 1 gift for each family member on a budget of $1 per gift? No more than $1. Everyone. And instead, make an effort to save what you can for a family beach vacation?

That 1st holiday was among the best ever! The creativity! The laughter! The supporting reasons for choosing or making certain gifts! And at dinner that day the beach vacation plans began.

It’s been 15 years. The gift budget went up to $2 after a few years and then $3 and $5. And the always awesome beach vacations continue to this day with family members pitching in as they’re able.
